Recently, Theodore Huang, Chairman of Taiwan’s Taipei Economic and Cultural Office, expressed his wish to introduce Tata Nano in Taiwan at the end of this year itself.

Taiwan is a democratic island that has a per capita income of $17,000. It has a growing middle class, which till date uses scooters but, is now looking at moving up to cars. This is the reason why Taiwan is looking for an economic car, both in terms of space and affects on the environment. Tata Nano has been designed in such a way that it is quite compact, but is easy to maneuver. In addition to the economic features of the car, Tata Nano is known as the world’s cheapest car.

Huang had visited Delhi in January and test driven Nano. He really liked the drive and was quoted as saying that the Nano is “extremely comfortable and satisfactory”. He observed that Tata Nano was smooth and can reach the speed of 100 km per hour in a short time.

After the drive, Huang expressed his desire to become the facilitator for the import of Tata Nano into Taiwan. He said “Tata Nano needs to be adjusted in accordance with the strict environment protection laws of Taiwan before it can be imported. If it is not possible to change the specifications of the car to conform to the rules and regulations laid down by the government of Taiwan, then it will have to be modified once it reaches Taiwan.” True to his words, Huang has also presented Tata Motors a copy of the Taiwan’s automobile safety requirements manual for reference. He said that he would look forward to Tata’s assessment of the same.

India-Taipei Association’s Director-General, Pradeep Kumar Rawat told the media, “The prospects of Tata Nano in the Taiwan market are quite bright.” He remarked that the Taiwanese are people who are really worried about the environment. Tata Nano being a small and environmentally clean car will appeal to the people of Taiwan.

Tata has priced the Nano at $2500 for the international market. With such a pricing, Tata aims to capture the small car segment in the international market. As a step forward in the same direction, Tata has also decided to launch a separate model that will comply with the strict environment norms of all international countries.

If the above deal does get through and Taiwan starts importing Tata Nano, then it will prove to be a true “people’s car”.
