The bad boy of Bollywood, Salman, has been known to have a soft spot for the poor and the suffering. It wasn’t too long ago when Salman was known to offer a new bicycle to a girl who’s bicycle got accidentally crushed under his wheels. Salman has also had the knack of appearing at many charitable events and other fund raising and social awareness events. In fact, a few years ago, Salman played a cameo in the Revathy’s heart rendering ‘Phir Milenge’, where he played the role of a man infected with HIV AIDS.

After advocating for poverty alleviation schemes, and for a better life for AIDS patients, Salman has now turned his attention to cancer patients. Salman believes that cancer patients should have a right to livelihood for as long as they are capable of working. He went as far as to say that a person who terminated the employment of a terminal cancer patient, will be terminated from this world by god himself.

Salman runs his own non governmental organization known as ‘Being Human’. His NGO picks up a variety of pertinent issues that might seem daunting to the society. The actor has pledge his own support to cancer patients and has also asked for his fans to support them as well.

This was revealed by eBay President & CEO John Donahoe in an interview with CNBC-TV18.

“In India, it is half a billion US dollar business e-commerce today. There is no reason why that cannot double in the next three years and then double in the following three years after that,” said Mr. Donahoe.

One of the reasons pointed out for this sudden explosion in e-commerce is the imminent arrival of 3G and mobile broadband, leading to mobile commerce. “What you are going to see in India…is with things like mobile devices, people accessing the internet seven days a week, 24 hours a day. You don’t have to be at a laptop, you don’t have to be at a desktop, you don’t have to be at a computer, you can be standing in line at the coffee shop or waiting for the bus with the smartphone or be standing in a store and use an SMS or text to discover where the price of an item you are thinking of buying is online. Things like that are pulling people into internet and e-commerce. As a result of that, line between online and offline is blurring,” he elaborated.

Mr. Donahoe added that eBay has at present 2.5 million registered users in India. He said that e-commerce sites like eBay not only offers a platform to buy and sell products, but also create direct and indirect jobs and help people earn a livelihood. For almost 12,800 sellers, eBay India is the primary or secondary source of income.

Regarding payment issues Mr. Donahoe said, “India is getting better on all the key friction points that reduce things like e-commerce… PaisaPay has been the way we have done that at eBay… Trust is growing online in India.”

Though it seems highly unlikely, India’s economy has a new antagonistic presence – that of the country’s throbbing veins – the road network. The plans to expand and strengthen the national highways have so far been over ambitious. Even today, as India strengthens its presence as an international trade entity, the internal trade suffers because of poor quality roads and a sordid state of affairs as far as the national highways are concerned.

A brief look at statistics simply reasserts the worst. While in developed countries, goods carrying trucks are able to cover about 800 km per day, Indian trucks are only able to cover about 350 Km per day on an average. This is because the roads are so bad that the average speed is a mere 20 Km/hr.

There has been some development in this regard. However, poor road conditions continue to wreak havoc for those whose livelihood depends on transportation of goods. Besides the low speed, there are also delays at every checkpoint where not only are truck drivers detained indefinitely, but money is also demanded of them.

A recent study has shown that every year the economy loses out on about $600 million because of the constant delays. This however is not all. One can add about $5 million that is wasted in terms of fuel because of the stoppages and the slow speed.
The volumes of the freight keeps on increasing by about 9.06% every year. However, as compared to the increase in the volume, only about 3.77% of roads are added to contain the volume every year.
