Indian railway earnings were up by 7.32 percent in April-May period. Indian Railways earned Rs 14,714.04 crores in April-May as against Rs 13,710.66 crores during the same period last year. The goods earning of the PSU have increased from Rs 9,333.48 crores during April 1 to May 31, 2009 to Rs 10,004.02 crores during same period this year, an increase of 7.18 per cent. The total passenger earnings by the PSU during first two months of the financial year 2010-11 also increased by 7.53 percent from Rs.3,831.02 crore last year same period to Rs 4,119.37 crore this year.

The total number of passengers booked during April- May period in 2010 was 1273.93 million compared to 1203.51 million during the same period last year. This is an increase of 5.85 percent. The revenue earnings from other coaching also rose by 5.96 percent from Rs.397.28 crore during the April-May period in 2009 to Rs 420.97 crores during the same period this year.

When compared to last year, suburban and non-suburban sectors, also witnessed an increase from 600.59 million and 602.92 million during April-May 2009 to 634.07 million and 639.86 million during the same period this year respectively.
