Railway Budget 2009 Highlights – Railway Budget Live Inida
Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee would present a People’s budget on July 3rd, 2009 in Parliament. She is representing railway budget third time.
These are highlights of this year’s budget -
* Request increased budgetary support for Rs 5000 cr in fiscal year 2010
* Provisions for new lines at Rs 2921 cr vs Rs 1100 crore
* To spend Rs 1750 crore on gauge conversion
* To set up Northeastern rail development funds
* New ‘Izzat’ scheme: Poor to get 25-rupee monthly tickets for 100-km travel
* All students will receive a 60% concession on tickets
* Non-stop train services between select cities
* 12 new point-to-point train services
* Safety is our first priority; improved safety signalling system will be in place: Mamata
* Integrated security systems have been placed in 150 sensitive stations
* Recruitment drive to fill-up backlog of SC/ST and women candidates
* 800 new locations for ticket reservations; 3000 new un-reserved ticket counters
* Passengers can buy un-reserved tickets from 5000 post offices
* Multi-functional utilities like bookstores and STD booths will be made available in stations
* Railways will extend a helping hand to physically-challenged people
* We will put at least one doctor in every long-distance train
* Toilets to be similar to ones in aircrafts; facilities for every journey longer than 2 hours
* We have decided to develop 50 world-class stations: Mamata
* The Railway must set an example of inclusive growth: Mamata
* Mamata says the old mindset of economic viability must be substituted with social viability and that Budget should be based on social viability
* Mamata Banerjee presents Railway Budget in Parliament for the third time
