The department of telecom (DoT) for the first time has come out with a list of do’s and don’t concerning the mobile phone etiquette. Its been estimated that there are about 415 million mobile phone users in India and millions who are first-time users. The government has asked telecom companies to provide literature on mobile phone etiquette in English and other regional languages whenever a customer buys a mobile phone and a SIM card. This is one of the major initiatives taken by the Government to use the mobile phone in a responsible manner, having due consideration and respect for the feeling of other individuals. The directive was issued after a parliamentary panel found that Indians lack mobile phone etiquette.

According to the directive, mobile phones should be switched off or kept in silent mode in hospitals, buses, trains, aircrafts, places of worship and cinema halls. Mobile phones should not be used while driving. Mobile phones should not be used to record or take photographs of people without consent and ringtones should be set at a lower level. Annoying or blaring ring tones should be avoided. Some of the corporate, schools and colleges have also come out with guidelines regarding use of mobile phone and mobile phone etiquette. Hopefully, with these initiatives mobile phone users will consider other people’s feelings and learn to use their phone in a responsible way.
