After its scintillating launch in Europe, the two-door showstopper from Mercedes-Benz is gearing up to hit Indian roads during the third quarter of this year. However, the sporty-looking SLS AMG would be beyond the reach of most with a price tag of Rs. 5-6 crore.

The car’s trendy looks are its highlights, though it doesn’t lack in features. Aluminum space frame body, 6.3-liter V8 front-mid-engine developing 420 kw and maximum torque of 650Nm, 7-speed double-declutch transmission, 19in front wheels and 20in rear wheels are some of its attractions.

SLS AMG can accelerate from 0-100 kmph in 3.8 seconds. The top speed of the car is limited to 317 kmph electronically.

Piyush Arora, director (technical) and board member, Mercedes-Benz India said, “The SLS will be available in India in the third quarter, though a date for the official launch has not yet been determined.”

The price in India much exceeds that in Europe (almost three times) due to the import duty and sundry taxes. The import duty for completely-built-units (CBUs) of automobiles is steep at 120%. This includes 106% customs duty.

Though the company officials are not forthcoming on a specific launch date in India, booking for the same is already underway with half-a-dozen bookings. With so many advance bookings, Mercedes-Benz may begin shipment of SLS AMG faster than it did with its E-class model, which was six months.

The luxury car segment is showing potential for growth in the country with sale of around 10,000 cars annually. With Indian economy prospering, more and more international players are launching their latest offerings in India without much delay. This month witnessed the launch of Porche 911 GT2 RS, the ‘ultimate super speed car’, priced at Rs. 1.5 crore.
