Government has convened a meeting with state chief ministers to discuss different measures to control rising food prices. The meeting is likely to be held at February 6th and will be chaired by the Prime Minister. Though the food inflation has fell to 16.81 percent during the week ended January 9th compared to 17.28 percent a week ago, the rate is still higher, compared with last year’s level of 11.59 percent during the same period. The Government has decided to release more grain in the next couple of months as a precautionary measure to contain rising food prices.
The food prices has been soaring and has been cause for concern for all as common man finds it difficult to buy essential food supplies. Cereal prices rose 14.18 percent, with wheat rising 15 percent and rice 12.64 percent. Milk prices also rose by 13.95 percent over last year and are likely to increase further due to lack of availability. Potato prices rose by 50 percent and pulses rose by 47.9 percent compared to last year. The cabinet committee has decided to provide additional 10kg of wheat or rice for the next two months to needy families holding Antodya, BPL, and APL cards. The wheat and rice will be sold at Rs.10.5/kg and Rs.15.37/kg respectively. The Government believes that this measure will help contain food price inflation.
