Medical tourism is a concept where people travel to other countries for their medical needs. It’s a unique combination of health and tourism services. India is considered as a leading country promoting medical tourism. Medical tourism is not a new concept but the interest in this business has increased tremendously. It is estimated that global medical tourism business will be $100 billion in 2012. In India medical tourism business is estimated to be $1 to $2 billion in 2012. With the growing popularity of medical tourism, India is moving to another new area of “medical outsourcing”, where subcontractors provide services to the overburdened medical care systems in western countries.

Gone are the days where people used to travel to US or UK for their medical needs. Today people from other countries travel to India for their medical needs. A combination of many factors has lead to the recent increase in popularity of medical tourism in India. Highly qualified Physicians/Surgeons/ hospital support staff, Internationally accredited medical facilities using the latest technologies, Exorbitant cost of healthcare and medical facilities in advanced countries, Ease and affordability of international travel, Favorable currency exchange rates in the global economy, Low waiting time for critical treatments and Fluent English speaking staff, has all contributed their share to this rapid development of medical tourism.

The potential cost savings for medical tourists are about 40 to 60 percent less than the cost in the US or UK. This includes the hospital stay, all procedure and physicians costs and transportation to and from India. Promoting India as travel destination has helped the growth of this business. The option of obtaining treatment and combining it with holiday seems lucrative enough for medical tourists to increase the revenue of medical tourism business in India.
