A study conducted by Institute for Competitiveness and CII indicates many benchmarks for Urban Development & Prosperity of India.

In the quality of life index and urban development, Delhi leads the chart. This fact was announced at International Conference on Competitive Cities “City Development: Emerging Business Models” which was organized by CII. Secretary in the Ministry of Urban Development Mr. M Ramachandran was also present at the event.

Even though, Delhi topped the charts, but other metropolitan cities like Chennai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Mumbai and Pune also made the top 8 in the list of most livable cities in India. What was most surprising was that all the cities from National Capital Region i.e. Noida, Gurgaon and Faridabad failed to make it in the top 8 best cities, as these cities are supposed to be the paradigm of progress.

These cities were ranked on The Livability Index 2010 which is a methodical index. It measures the quality of life in the cities of our country. A comprehensive survey study was conducted in 37 cities. The ranking of the cities were based on their demographics, education, safety, socio-cultural political environment, health & medical standards, economic environment, housing, and natural build & planned environment.

This report throws another surprise as it declares Delhi as safest city in the country, followed by Bangaluru and Bhopal. This is a surprise as the city has been receiving a lot of ire from various sections of media which have been terming it as one of the most unsafe cities in India. The NCR region again fared poorly in terms of safety. This raises the question of whether an unsafe NCR region is the reason behind rising crime in the Capital.

Apart from safety, Delhi is also the best in the field of economic environment and education. Bangaluru and Mumbai follow the suit. But Mumbai tops the list of cities in the Socio-political environment, but Delhi ranks second best in this list too. Mumbai also leads in city planning, in which Delhi is ranked third.

People in Kerala should be very proud as three of their cities – Trivandrum, Kozhikode and Kochi topped the list in Health and Medical standards. Delhi scored badly in this region and was ranked 17th where as Mumbai and Bangaluru ranked 12th and 18th respectively.

When it comes to house-cost & availability, Bangaluru tops the charts whereas Vishakhapatnam, Kolkata, Nagpur, Nashik, Vadodara, Coimbatore and Kochi were among the worst cities in this aspect.

This report has put forward many questions on the standard of living in our cities. The report clearly shows glaring mistakes in urban planning and shortcomings of infrastructure in some of our best cities.

It would be great if the ranking position of various cities under all the decisive parameters/factors could be available here. It would be great if I could get it.

I’m quite curious as to know the performance/rank of Hyderabad as I’ve been there for a long time & am very much impressed with the standard of life & comfortability there.

    thanks.
